Auch wenn ich mir ggf den Groll vieler Vancouver-Fans aufhalse, muss ich gestehen, dass Vancouver durchaus hübsch gelegen ist und die Kombination aus Meer und Bergen eine tolle Ansichtskartenoptik macht, aber im Endeffekt ist es, meiner Meinung nach, eine Großstadt wie viele andere. Dieser Eindruck mag daran liegen das wir in einer der übelsten Gegenden der Stadt untergekommen sind.
Wenn man East Hastings als seinen Wohnort angibt, lässt es in der Regel alle Vancouveraner zusammenzucken. Drogendealer, Prostituierte und Obdachlose säumen die Straßen zu jeder Tages- und Nachtzeit. Als Ex-Berliner schockt es uns weniger als die Einheimischen, die darauf achten sich nicht in diesen Straßenblock zu verirren.
Selbst Christian, ein bekannter von uns der seit 10 Jahren in Vancouver lebt, riet uns davon ab in das Patricia Inn Hotel in der 403 East Hastings Street zu ziehen, da die Gegend nicht zu ertragen sei. Für uns zählte allerdings nur der Preis, denn für 80$ pro Nacht war es ein Schnäppchen im Vergleich zu anderen Hotels/Hostels in Zentrumsnähe.
Ich finde es aber gar nicht so schlimm das wir genau in dieser Ecke der Stadt gelandet sind denn so haben wir ein anderes Gesicht dieser Übermetropole bekommen, welches gern durch die Touristenbüros versteckt wird. Ausserdem ist im Erdgeschoss ein Pub mit ausgezeichneten Bieren, Livemusik und bezahlbaren Preisen ;-)

Most beautyful city in the world
Of course I have to admit, that the town is nicely located between the sea and the mountains, what a postcard setting. But, even if a lot of Vancouverfans will disagree, for me it turned out to
be just another big city as many others. The reason for this impression may be that we ended up in the worst part of town. People of Vancouver would mostly shrink back, when we told them, we're
living in East Hastings. Drugdealers, prostitutes and homeless people live on these streets night and day. Having lived in Berlin for quiet a while it did actually not shock us that much, but the
Canadians mostly took good care not to get lost in this neighbourhood.
We were told not to move in the Patricia Inn Hotel at 403 East Hastings because the neighbourhood would not be acceptable at all. But for us the cheap price was important and nothing as close to
the citycenter could beat the 80$ per night not even the hostels with shared bathrooms.
In the end, I found it not too bad to see this side of the so highly recommended city as well. This side that is mostly hidden and withhold. Besides the pub on the ground floor had good beer and
livemusic for affordable rates ;-)
